INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

THEOLOGY OF DIALOGUE

7-10 November 2012
Novi Sad, Serbia

THEME OF THE CONFERENCE

The dialogue between Christians of different confessions has become very important in the contemporary world. This dialogue presupposes as its ultimate aim restoration of full communion between separated churches. This aim however is not something that could be easily and quickly achieved and requires a lot of work to be done for its realization. However, even first steps in this direction show that inter-Christian dialogue bears a lot of good fruits for those who are engaged in it.

Communication between representatives of different traditions leads to a better understanding of each other and to mutual enrichment. Furthermore, our awareness of the other brings about a change of our own mind. This leads us from the dialogue for understanding to the dialogue for change. An important part of this dialogue is reassessment of the past, especially of the events that caused disagreements and divisions between churches, which were often accompanied by condemnations and anathemas. Purification of memory thus becomes a very important aspect of any interconfessional dialogue. The same applies to any interreligious dialogue which has also become very important today.

Neither of these however can be made possible without genuine and authentic love towards the other. It is love that lies at the very heart of any true dialogue, which therefore can properly be called the dialogue of love. ‘He who does not love does not know God; for God is love’ (1John 4:8). It is with this point that any theological reflection on the dialogue should begin before it turns to the discussion of different aspects and levels of dialogue, both theoretical and practical.

The concept of dialogue, due to the works of 20th century thinkers such as Martin Buber, Emmanuel Levinas, Mikhail Bakhtin etc., has taken an important place in the contemporary philosophical and theological discourse. It seems however that this often remains at the level of scholarly talks about ‘dialogue in general’, full of fascinating and exciting ideas but without any significant realization in terms of praxis. In this sense, any theology of dialogue should be ultimately orientated towards concrete work in the field of inter-Christian and inter-religious relations.

The aim of the forthcoming conference is to discuss the ways in which theology of dialogue can be developed and how this can be applied on the practical level, in the dialogue between religious communities and persons in different cultural contexts.

Oppositions: An Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference
Oppositions: An Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference
28th and 29th September 2012
University of Salford

This conference seeks to explore ideas of opposition through the full range of disciplines

in the arts, media, and social sciences. In the context of the current crisis of

capitalism, there are many examples of the forms 'opposition' can take: the Tea Party in

the United States, the rise of fascist groups, campaigns run via new technologies and

social media, religious fundamentalisms, and general strikes in Greece. Though it carries

radical overtones, 'opposition' in itself is not tied to any particular dogma, left or

right.

We invite papers that explore the value and values of opposition as a position to be

adopted by individuals or groups. We welcome proposals for papers from postgraduates that

engage with any aspect of opposition.

These could include, but are by no means limited to: the 'culture industry' and alternative

youth cultures; opposition parties within parliamentary politics; grass-roots activism; the

history and future of the labour movement; hegemony; Foucauldian 'resistance' and its

limits; radical pedagogies and the role of the University; community and class; the

aesthetic value of non-mainstream or outsider art; aesthetic oppositions such as

contrapuntal music or bricolage; and the formation of creole or pidgin languages.

Papers are welcome from fields such as politics, literature, philosophy, anthropology,

religions and theology, geography, sociology, history, classics, translation studies,

linguistics and social linguistics, visual and screen studies, new media and communication

studies, and the performing arts. Interdisciplinary papers are very welcome. Keynote

speakers TBC.

Abstracts of 250 words are invited for presentations of 20 minutes. Proposals for

performances, screenings etc. are also accepted. The conference intends to publish an

edited volume of the best papers presented. Send abstracts to

oppositionsconference[at]gmail.com by 6 July 2012.

Never Waste a Crisis. Strategies of Representing and Managing Crisis after the Crash
CALL FOR PAPER PROPOSALS

Never Waste a Crisis. Strategies of Representing and Managing Crisis after the Crash

1-2 November, 2012, Midland Hotel, Morecambe

Deadline for paper proposals: 17 June, 2012, to be sent to a.kutter@lancaster.ac.uk

Workshop organised by CPERC, Sociology Department, Lancaster University, within the frames

of Bob Jessop's ESRC professorial fellowship and the project "Great Transformations. A

Cultural Political Economy of Crisis Management"

The North Atlantic Financial Crisis that surfaced in 2007/08 and subsequent efforts at

crisis management have produced unstable constellations. Whereas the financial sector has

been rescued with large injections of capital but minor structural adjustments, the

symptoms in many economies of 'epic recession' and fiscal crisis remain. Among political

and economic elites, such finance-centred crisis management remains largely unchallenged.

At the same time, the economic and social costs of the austerity packages and of a

finance-dominated economy more generally have spurred contestation from various quarters.

The workshop on 'Strategies of Representing and Managing Crisis after the Crash' seeks to

explore the politics (broadly interpreted) of this constellation. Papers in the workshop

will review different agents' strategies of tackling the North Atlantic Financial Crisis

through discursive construction, contestation, and policy-making. We encourage the

submission of papers that highlight the discursive and semiotic of economic and political

processes or that situate the analysis of crisis discourse in broader questions of

political economy.

Speakers include so far: Colin Hay (tbc), David Howarth, Brigitte Young

Please find the full call attached.

conference with an interdisciplinary approach.

The conference will
be held on the university campus on OCTOBER 13th-14th, 2012 with a
Keynote Address by PROF. CHRISTOPHER ROOTES and PROF. DOMINIC ABRAMS of
the University of Kent.

The aim is to explore the study of social
movements with a variety of academic lenses and attempt to develop
collaboration between disciplines on the study. We seek contributions
for a broad range of disciplines and a mixture of disciplines including
sociology, law, psychology, politics, economics, cultural studies,
history, geography, philosophy, literature, and film studies. We hope to
use this conference as a forum to
bridge some of the gaps between the different disciplines and their work in the field of social movements.

We
seek contributions from all scholars including postgraduate students.
Proposals will be selected on their merit and in consideration of their
academic discipline, with a preference to integrate a wide variety of
fields. We are open to themes such as

Feminisms and Marxisms
The deadline for registrations of abstracts for the Call for Papers 'Feminisms and Marxisms', in the framework of the 2012 London HM conference, has been extended to Friday 1 June 2012.
This will be a final deadline, so please do submit your proposed paper or panel in time at: http://www.historicalmaterialism.org/conferences

Tradition and the Italian Resistance
A panel at Historical Materialism's Ninth Annual Conference, London, 8-11 November

Deep into the seventh decade of the post-war period, the legacy of the Italian Resistance continues to represent an important battleground in Italian public life. As the summer 2011 fight over keeping the 25th April national holiday showed, the traditions of the anti-fascist struggle still have deep emotional and political meaning for the left. Yet this tradition is also rather contradictory in character, both a lasting symbol of the left's past glory and a national myth for the postwar Republic and its parties.
In the proposed panel we will explore the tensions between the lived experience of the Resistance period and its traditions and mythology in postwar Italy. Moreover, the panel will seek to use the Resistance experience to examine the importance of traditions in interconnecting the high points of the Italian left: from the lessons the 1970s extra-parliamentary left drew from 1943-45 to the Resistance generation's own narratives of the biennio rosso, the fight against the rise of Mussolini and the Spanish Civil War.
We welcome paper proposals (between 200 and 300 words), in English or Italian, in the following areas:
- Narratives of the Resistance and the instrumentalisation of historical memory

- A 'long Resistance'? The struggles of the 1920s and 1930s and the Resistance
- The PCI that emerged from Fascism and its pre-1926 traditions

- The national mythology of the Resistance and the 'patriotic' traditions of the PCI

- Working-class and women's experience of war, occupation and rebellion 1940-45 outside and beyond 'the Resistance'

- Left critiques of anti-fascism as ideology and anti-fascism in practice

- Pavone's Una guerra civile: a national, civil and class war?

- Regional, class, and gender differentiations within the Resistance and 'forgotten' Resistance forces

- Doppiezza: revolutionary aspirations during the Resistance and in the immediate post-war period
- The assimilation of the Resistance experience by 1960s-70s extra-parliamentary forces and the left today
Paper proposals should be submitted by registering at http://www.historicalmaterialism.org/conferences BEFORE 1 June 2012 and sent, together with a short CV, to David Broder at d.broder@lse.ac.uk
The expected presenting time will be around 20-25 minutes per speaker, depending on the exact number of papers. The official language of the Historical Materialism Conference is English.

Systemic Risks, Financial Crises and Credit
Many intellectuals, Jurgen Habermas among them, argue that the management of the financial crisis undermines democracy. The COST-Network 'Systemic Risks, Financial Crises and Credit' invites papers that critically examine this claim. Do financialization and the management of the financial crisis circumscribe democratic institutions and processes? If yes, what are the mechanisms that restrict democracy? Potential themes include:

- The sources of power of financial actors

- The role of knowledge networks in crisis management

- Conflicting crisis narratives

- Restructuring the State to accommodate financial capital

- New hierarchies among nations

- Diffusion of policy concepts and policy learning processes

- Resistance and civil society

interdisciplinary workshop "Big Bang, Big Data, Big Computers" (Big3)
Subject: Comp Sci and Stats of CMB Data Analysis, France, Sep 2012

We would like to bring to your attention an interdisciplinary workshop
"Big Bang, Big Data, Big Computers" (Big3) on the computer science and
statistics of contemporary Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data
analysis, to be held in Paris from Sept 19-21, 2012 in the
AstroParticule et Cosmologie (APC) Laboratory at the Paris Rive Gauche
Campus of the Université Paris Diderot.

The main idea of the workshop is to bring together people from
different walks of science relevant, or potentially relevant, to CMB
data analysis. The latter is an extremely active and timely area of
observational cosmology, which over the years has contributed
enormously to our understanding of the Universe, and which constantly
poses novel, exciting challenges in diverse areas of the scientific
research, and for which an interdisciplinary approach will be an
extremely fruitful — if not the only — way forward.

More information about the workshop can be found at:
http://www.apc.univ-paris7.fr/APC/Co...Big3/Home.html

A REGISTRATION and an ABSTRACT SUBMISSION of the contributed talks is
now open (till July 15, 2012). We invite contributions from all areas
of science of interest. Check the website for more details. There is
no conference fee.
