PhD/Postdoc position NTNU, Norway: Leveraging Modern Iterative Methods
for Fast Approximate Bayesian Computing
We have received funding for a joint PhD or Postdoctoral position in
statistical computing and numerical analysis. This position is one of
the projects offered as bart of the `Lighthouse CSE - Scientific
Computing' joint initiative between the Department of Computer and
Information Science and the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim,
Norway. This initiative contains three projects for which there are
two PhD positions and one Postdoctoral position on offer.
The aim of the project is to design efficient iterative methods for
large scale Bayesian Gaussian linear models. In spite of their
ubiquity in modern numerical analysis, iterative linear algebra
methods—and, in particular, Krylov subspace methods—have rarely been
used in computational statistics. This is, in part, because
statistical problems require the computation of difficult quantities,
such as matrix square roots, inverses and determinants, as well as the
more common task of solving linear systems. In addition to methodology
building we aim to build statistical software that will allow these
new methods to be used by applied statisticians. These methods, and
the associated software which will be produced during this project,
will be of immediate use not only in climate modeling, but also in
animal breeding, and air quality modeling. Furthermore, we expect that
this project will have an enormous and immediate influence on
statistical practice.
The PhD position is for 3 years with a possible extension to 4 years
with teaching and other duties for candidates who speak a Scandinavian
language. The position is remunerated according to wage levels 50 to
62 on the Norwegian State salary Scale, with gross salary from NOK 416
300 to NOK 512 700 a year, of which 2% is deducted for the Norwegian
Public Service Pension Fund.
The postdoctoral position will be offered a 2 year period. This
position is remunerated according to wage levels 57 - 77 on Norwegian
State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 468 100 to NOK 688 900
a year, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension scheme.
