POSITION: Ph.D. Assistantship


Applications are invited for a four-year Ph.D. studentship in
the area of computational atmospheric chemical transport
modeling.

Numerical modeling of chemical transport in the Earth
atmosphere is of major importance for atmospheric chemistry
research. It plays an essential role in addressing issues of
air quality, aerosol formation and evolution, acid formation,
and global budgets of greenhouse gases. The computational
challenge of modeling atmospheric chemical transport is
enormous since the system of governing equations is extremely
stiff, nonlinear and involves a large number of chemically
interacting species.

RESPONSIBILITIES: We are seeking a Ph.D. student for NSF funded
research project to develop and apply multi-scale Adaptive Mesh
Refinement numerical methods for atmospheric chemical transport
modeling. The work is computational and theoretical in nature
but with important implications for atmospheric chemical
transport modeling.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a Bachelor/Master Degree
either in Applied Mathematics, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics or
Engineering or other relevant field. Previous experience with
Atmospheric sciences and Atmospheric Chemistry will be a plus,
though is not required. The candidate should be highly
motivated, goal oriented. Experience in CFD modeling, solid
background in numerical methods and programming skills in
fortran90 are essential. Preference will be given to those who
have previous experience in computer programming and algorithm
development and application related to computational physics/fluid dynamics.

gasification. Biomass gasification is a conversion of organic based
carbonaceous materials into syngas through the process of partial
oxidation in a fluidized bed gasifier. Syngas may be burned directly
in gas engines, used to produce methanol and hydrogen, or converted
into synthetic fuel. The efficient and economic production of energy
from biomass and other renewable natural resources is necessary to
transform the U.S. energy industry to energy independence and
sustainability.

RESPONSIBILITIES: We are seeking a Ph.D. student for NSF funded
research project to develop mathematical model and numerical code
for biomass gasification modeling. FLUENT software will be used for
the numerical code development. The work is computational and
theoretical in nature but with important implications for advancement
of the gasifier design and operation, since the developed mathematical
model and computational code will provide a fast and powerful
prototyping tool for control, optimization of a biomass gasification
process.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a Bachelor/Master Degree
either in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or other relevant
field. The candidate should be highly motivated, goal oriented.

Условия обучения и работы максимально комфортные - стипендия выше чем в большинстве ВУЗов США, а нагрузка значительно меньше. Обеспеченность оборудованием >> 100% (например, только в моем личном распоряжении находится 3 рабочих станции Dell 2011 года выпуска, в соседнем кабинете стоит столько же бесхозных). Профессор русскоязычный, что гарантирует мягкий вход в англоязычную среду.
Для иностранцев проводятся бесплатные курсы английского языка как в группах, так и с индивидуальным тьютором. Имеются группы разного уровня - от начинающих до продвинутых. Состав групп достаточной интересный. Например, в моей группе есть представители Германии, Южной Кореи, Китая и Судана. На этих занятиях можно не только изучать язык, но и знакомиться с культурой разных стран.
В университете действуют Fraternities and Sororities (Alpha Phi Alpha, Beta Phi Epsilon и т.д.). Иногда по ночам любителей живой музыки развлекает местный marching band

у нас желательно бы все в утиль отправить, смотришь как там красиво, чисто и уютно, и на свою убогую страну смотреть не хочется, не то, что жить здесь

Сын у друзей закончил там бакалавриат и пошел в магистратуру. Они регулярно ездят к нему в гости. Так вот, папа - не самый мелкий служащий налоговой полиции, патриот (я так раньше думал), приехав оттуда в первый раз, сказал простую фразу: "Это - страна для людей".
